Windows has security loop holes. You should tighten up Windows, and then test it at http://www.firewallguide.com/test.htm .

# For Windows 95/98/ME, the best way to secure your Windows 95, 98 or ME PC is to get rid of the operating system and install Windows 2000 or XP running on an NTFS type disk partition as opposed to the FAT or FAT32 that is used by (and then following the security instructions in the guides for those systems). Quite simply all versions of Windows 9x and ME are just terribly, horribly insecure, almost by design! There are weaknesses in file permissions, password hashing, registries and system boot files and many other areas."
# Turn off file and printer sharing in Windows if you do not use this feature.
# Check at least weekly and download and install free security updates as needed:

* Security patches for Windows and other software from Microsoft. http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

* For anti-virus, anti-trojan and privacy software.
Avast Antivirus - http://www.avast.com/
Norton AntiVirus - http://www.symantec.com
Mcafee Antivirus - http://www.mcafee.com
Bazooka Adware/Spyware Scanner - http://www.kephyr.com/

* Security related updates for any other software that you have that connects to the Internet from other vendors (browser, email, etc).

# If you use Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express, consider replacing them with another well regarded email program like Eudora. Why? Propagation of most malicious code (virus, Trojan & worm) is done by email and is designed to take advantage of weaknesses in Microsoft products. Eudora is supported by the email scanners of Norton, Panda, McAfee and Trend Micro anti-virus products.

Eudora Mail Client - http://www.eudora.com/

# If you use Microsoft Internet Explorer, its recomended that you do consider other web browsers too. Mozilla came out with Firefox browser which is able to prevent unneccessary activeX controls & also block pop up ads. Its have several program extensions like AdBlock and Tweak Network Settings to make this web browser flawless.
